Key West is the southernmost island of the Florida Keys archipelago, as well as the southernmost point of the United States! Key West is an island with a tropical climate, sunny year-round.

Key West island is the final stop on « Overseas Highway 1 ». With Key West island, it's the end of the road that takes you through the islands of the Florida Keys via a thrilling succession of bridges, but also the starting point for the mile markers with « MM 0 » !
The city of Hemingway
In 1928, Ernest Hemingway arrived in Key West to pick up a car and was offered accommodation by the car dealer while waiting for a delayed delivery. Hemingway fell in love with the city's lifestyle and quickly became captivated by Key West. This marked the beginning of a 10-year love affair ! Hemingway moved into a spanish Colonial villa at 907 Whitehead Street, where he lived until December 1939. Today, Hemingway's former home is listed as a National Historic Landmark.
The most southern and lively of the islands
The terminus of a long road for some, a stop on the Caribbean route for others, the city of Key West attracts many tourists throughout the year ! The presence of cruise ships, these giants of the sea, doesn't go unnoticed along the docks near Mallory Square. The city of Key West is also the starting point for discovering the Dry Tortugas islands, all dressed in red bricks and surrounded by turquoise waters. The excursion is done as a day trip either by sea by boat or by air in a seaplane !
A giant marker awaits you at the far west of Duval Street to immortalize your visit to the southernmost point of the United States. The marker reminds you that you're only 90 miles away from the island of Cuba !
Discovering Key West
For a visit to Key West, the Conch Trains are waiting to take you on a tour of the city, showcasing its old neighborhoods with colorful Creole-style houses, the Truman's Little White House, and more. As you stroll through the streets of Key West, the city's iconic landmarks pass by before your eyes !
The city, due to its compact size at the far southern tip, can be easily explored on foot from east to west, with Duval Street serving as the main artery. In fact, shopping lovers and tourists on the hunt for souvenirs will be pleased with the many shops and boutiques lining Duval Street! Giant cookies provide a perfect opportunity for a tasting break, while cigars will remind you of the Cuban influence on the city.
The tropical butterflies at the Key West "Butterfly and Nature Conservatory" will delight both young and old !
Mallory Square, an iconic square
Overhyped by all the travel guides, Mallory Square seems to come alive as the sun sets! As the sun declines on the horizon, Mallory Square buzzes with energy. Tourists seem to appear from nowhere to watch the sunset! In just moments, the square is crowded, and a parade of all kinds of boats begins, showing off in front of the tourists waiting for the sunset! Finally, the sky bursts into a fiery orange-red color as the sun disappears below the horizon !
Finally, after the sunset, Key West begins its nightlife with all its restaurants and bars, like the famous Sloppy Joe’s!
How to get there ?
Key West is located about 161 miles from Miami, and the theoretical travel time of 3.5 hours can vary greatly due to often heavy traffic, especially before weekends. Key West also has an international airport served by many cities from the mainland.
Once you’re there, it can be difficult to park in downtown Key West, but most hotels offer shuttle services to take you into the city center !
