« Ocean Drive » is the famous vibrant street located in South Beach, Florida, along the Atlantic ocean. Its name is closely tied to the Art Deco artistic movement of the 1920s in the United States and to a vibrant life at all hours of the day !
« Ocean Drive » is, with its large white sand beach, terraces and small hotels, the most touristy part of the « Art Deco District » in the city of Miami Beach, listed as a site to be preserved in the « National Register of Historic Places » since 1979.
A beachfront street, but not only
« Ocean Drive » undoubtedly constitutes the nerve center of the « Art Deco District » ! This long avenue starts in the south of Miami Beach and heads north. On your right, a vast white sand beach stretches to the ocean, while on your left, a series of pastel-colored hotels and buildings face the Atlantic ocean. The avenue comes alive from the early morning hours, the perfect time to have breakfast on a terrace facing the ocean before the influx of tourists floods the area until late at night !
Needless to say, it is often difficult to drive and find a parking spot, especially when the avenue is filled with "cruising" enthusiasts showing off their flashy luxury sports cars !
Strolling along « Ocean Drive » is like stepping into the United States of the 1920s, with its American cars featuring distinctive shapes and candy-colored hues, including the legendary Buick ! « Ocean Drive » is a theater with a 1920s decor and a very unique retro atmosphere !
Facing the ocean, the pastel-colored hotels
The section of « Ocean Drive » between « 6th Street » to the south and « 11th Street » to the north concentrates a large portion of Art Deco-style hotels, including:
Park Central Hotel
630, Ocean Drive
Built in 1937 by architect Henry Hohauser, one of the masters of Art Deco in Miami, it is considered one of the finest architectural achievements of that era. With its lavender and blue façade, it was nicknamed the “Blue Jewel”. During Ocean Drive’s golden age, the hotel hosted Hollywood celebrities such as Clark Gable, Carole Lombard and Rita Hayworth. With its white and blue exterior, porthole-style and small-paned windows, and typical Art Deco geometric lines, the hotel perfectly embodies the iconic style of South Beach.
Colony Hotel
736, Ocean Drive
The Colony is one of the first hotels designed in 1935 by architect Henry Hohauser and played a major role in shaping South Beach’s visual identity. Its iconic façade of horizontal bands and its blue neon lights make it one of the most recognizable and photographed hotels in all of
South Beach.
Waldorf Towers Hotel
860, Ocean Drive
The Waldorf Towers stands out for its elegance and flawless white façade. The hotel reflects the classic glamour of Miami Beach, offering a contrast between the lively atmosphere of Ocean Drive and the quiet luxury of its architecture.
Breakwater Hotel
940, Ocean Drive
Built in 1939 by architect Anton Skislewicz, the hotel features a symmetrical façade, a wide porch and a vertical blue neon sign that defines its iconic silhouette at night.
In 1984, the Breakwater’s rooftop terrace was used as the location for a famous photo shoot for Calvin Klein’s Obsession fragrance campaign, which helped introduce South Beach’s Art Deco style to the world.
Casa Casuarina
1116, Ocean Drive
Built in 1930, Casa Casuarina, better known as the Versace Mansion, was the former lavish residence of the Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace. It blends modern architecture with artistic touches inspired by fashion. Every detail, from the colorful façades to the elegant interiors, reflects Gianni Versace’s unique world, offering visitors an immersion into a realm where luxury and creativity meet. It is a place where fashion becomes an experience and every corner tells a story of refinement.
Finally, dining at Gianni’s restaurant at the Versace Mansion in South Beach means enjoying refined Italian and Mediterranean cuisine in a spectacular baroque setting adorned with colorful mosaics, combining gastronomy and legendary glamour. An elegant dress code is recommended to match the chic and romantic atmosphere of the place.
Leslie Hotel
1244, Ocean Drive
Built in 1937 and originally named the Edsinger Hotel, the Leslie was designed by architect Albert Anis. A true gem, the Leslie Hotel stands out with its bright yellow and white façade, strong horizontal and vertical lines, and symmetrical shape.
Carlyle
1250, Ocean Drive
Built in 1939, the Carlyle features typical Tropical Art Deco characteristics, including curved or angular façades, window awnings, bold horizontal and vertical lines, and details that blend fluid geometry with modern elegance.
The building’s aesthetic has made the Carlyle popular in cinema and photography, as it has been used as a filming location for movies and TV shows.
Crescent Hotel
1420, Ocean Drive
Built in 1938, the Crescent features an iconic façade inspired by a steamship, with small porthole-style windows illuminated by neon lights along the upper section.
Lively day and night
In the early hours of the day, enjoy the relative calm of « Ocean Drive » for a breakfast on one of the many terraces facing the ocean !
But very quickly, the vibrant life of the avenue takes over, continuing late into the night ! As night falls, neon lights in all colors illuminate the hotel facades, sparkling in the nighttime landscape !
Ocean Drive is bordered by a magnificent large white sand beach, where you can lounge in the sun and enjoy a swim in the warm waters of the Atlantic ocean.
Biking on Ocean Drive
A symbol of South Beach, Ocean Drive captivates not only with its Art Deco façades and lively atmosphere but also with its recent commitment to sustainable mobility. Since March 2022, Ocean Drive has featured a protected bike lane bordered by separators, allowing visitors to explore Miami Beach’s shoreline safely by bike. This route offers a pleasant and eco-friendly way to experience cafés, historic hotels and the city’s famous oceanfront promenade.
How to get there ?
Accessible from Miami, the « Mac Arthur Causeway » extends into « 5th Street » and takes you across Biscayne Bay directly south to « Ocean Drive » at 510, with the Atlantic ocean in front of you.
Turn left to take « Ocean Drive » north and you're ready to travel back in time for a trip to the 1920s !
