Sealife guideThe Bothidae familyThe taxonomy of marine species
Explore the taxonomy of the sea vertebrates including the cetaceans like the whales or the dolphins, the sea birds, the fish, the sharks and the sea turtles !
The family Bothidae includes about 160 species of marine flatfishes, characterized by a strongly laterally compressed body and both eyes located on the same side of the head, usually the left. In their juvenile stage, these fish are symmetrical, but as they grow, one eye migrates, creating the typical asymmetry of the adult. As benthic predators, they feed primarily on small fish and crustaceans and possess remarkable camouflage abilities, allowing them to blend into sandy or coral substrates and change color to adapt to their environment.
