Koufonissi Island, a small paradise in the Cyclades archipelago in the Aegean Sea, is one of Greece's most secluded and authentic destinations. Although it is part of the Small Cyclades, which remained largely untouched by tourism for many years, Koufonissi Island has become increasingly popular in recent years, like its neighboring islands, thanks to its pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and peaceful atmosphere.

One island, two faces
Koufonissi, together with Iraklia, Schinoussa, and Donoussa, forms a small archipelago commonly known as the Small Cyclades, located between Naxos to the northwest and Amorgos to the southeast, two major islands of the Cyclades.
In reality, Koufonissi refers to a group of two main islands: Ano Koufonissi and Kato Koufonissi, along with a few uninhabited islets nearby.
Ano Koufonissi, the inhabited island, is the smaller of the two, covering just 3.5 km2 (1.4 sq mi), but it attracts visitors with its tranquility and natural beauty. Kato Koufonissi, meanwhile, is uninhabited and offers secluded coves that you can explore on boat excursions.

Chora and the harbor
Arriving at Ano Koufonissi means entering a small harbor dominated by a white windmill before reaching Chora, the island's main village. Whitewashed houses, narrow lanes, and the Church of Agios Georgios give the village the characteristic appearance of a small Cycladic island.
The small size of Ano Koufonissi makes it easy to explore on foot or by bicycle. From Chora, a path follows the coastline and leads to several beaches and small coves without requiring long distances. This easy access contributes greatly to the island's peaceful atmosphere and makes it possible to enjoy the scenery without relying on a vehicle.
An easy coastline to explore
As you leave Chora heading east, the coastline gradually reveals a succession of small beaches and coves with exceptionally clear waters. The coast can be explored on foot, with regular stops for swimming or observing the seabed in the rocky areas.
This layout makes Koufonissi an especially enjoyable destination for alternating between walking and swimming. Sea caves and rock formations also add a wilder dimension to the scenery, particularly around Pori and the small coves north of the island.
The beaches of Koufonissi
From Ammos to Pori
The beach of Ammos, located near Chora, is the main beach of Ano Koufonissi. Its fine sand and shallow waters make it an easy place for a first swim. Farther along the coast, Finikas offers a more peaceful setting with golden sand and tamarisk trees, while Fanos features small rocky coves that are ideal for exploring the seabed with a mask and snorkel.

The beach of Italida, also known as Platia Pounta, has a more secluded atmosphere and is undeveloped. Continuing north, the coastal path leads to Pori, a wide bay lined with white sand. Nearby are the natural pool of Pisina, the rock formation of Mati tou Diavolou, and the spectacular marine formation of Gala.
The coves of Kato Koufonissi
A boat excursion allows you to reach Kato Koufonissi, the uninhabited island located near Ano Koufonissi. Its coastline has a wilder character, with several small beaches and coves accessible from the sea or after a short walk.
Among the sites accessible on these excursions are the beaches of Panagia, Detis, Hawaii, and Nero. Hawaii stands out for its golden sand, sea caves, and passages between the rocks, while Nero is farther away and better suited to those looking for a peaceful spot.
Kato Koufonissi, the wild side of the archipelago
An uninhabited island
Unlike Ano Koufonissi, Kato Koufonissi is not permanently inhabited. Its unspoiled coastline contrasts with the village and more popular beaches of its neighboring island. The island is mainly discovered on a kaiki or small-boat excursion, with several opportunities for swimming and walking.

The landscapes of Kato Koufonissi are particularly marked by rocks, small sea caves, and turquoise waters. Once you reach the island, a few minutes of walking may sometimes be necessary to reach the beaches, helping preserve their wild and secluded character.
An excursion between sea and nature
A trip to Kato Koufonissi completes the discovery of Ano Koufonissi. While the inhabited island is easy to explore on foot between Chora and the beaches, Kato Koufonissi offers a wilder experience centered on coves, swimming, and exploring the coastline.
During this excursion, you will also have the opportunity to admire sea caves and rock formations shaped by the sea. They are among the distinctive features of the Koufonissia and contribute to the wild Mediterranean character of this Small Cyclades archipelago.
An island rooted in tradition
Island life
Despite its growing popularity, Koufonissi has retained the atmosphere of a small Greek island. Fishing plays an important role in the local identity, and seafood is an integral part of everyday life on the island. Taverns and restaurants offer opportunities to discover this cuisine based on fresh ingredients and seafood specialties.
Hospitality and a strong sense of community also play an important role in local life. Religious celebrations and panigyria, traditional Greek festivals held in honor of patron saints, still contribute to the island's lively atmosphere and the preservation of its traditions.
Island festivals
Traditional events include celebrations for Agios Georgios, the fishermen's festival, and the festivities honoring Panagia. These events generally combine religious traditions with moments of celebration and community gathering in a typically island atmosphere.
Beyond its beaches and turquoise waters, Koufonissi also invites you to discover a way of life that remains deeply rooted in island traditions. Religious festivals, fishing, and the welcoming nature of the local community all contribute to the island's identity within the Small Cyclades.
