Charlotte Amalie, the capital
Charlotte Amalie, the capital of St. Thomas, is a treasure of history and culture. Take time to stroll through its cobblestone streets and discover its beautifully preserved colonial buildings, duty-free shops, and local art galleries.
Do not miss Fort Christian, the island's oldest landmark, which now houses a museum showcasing the rich and turbulent history of St. Thomas. Climb the famous « 99 Steps », a staircase made of coral stone that leads you to a breathtaking view over the city and its harbor.
Go on an adventure !
St. Thomas is a playground for adventure lovers. Explore the hiking trails of St. Thomas National Park, where you can admire lush vegetation and breathtaking panoramic views.
For an unforgettable experience, take an excursion to Buck island, a small uninhabited island two-thirds surrounded by a coral reef made of elkhorn coral, where you can swim or snorkel among sea turtles, rays, and a wide variety of colorful fish.
Duty-free shopping
St. Thomas is also well known for its duty-free shopping. The streets of Charlotte Amalie are lined with numerous shops offering jewelry, watches, branded clothing, and handmade souvenirs at attractive prices.
After a good day of shopping, treat yourself to a break in one of the island's many restaurants. Enjoy Creole dishes, fresh seafood, or local specialties while taking in the ocean view.
How to get there ?
St. Thomas is served by direct or connecting flights via Cyril E. King Airport, located just northwest of Charlotte Amalie, the island's capital. Many airlines offer direct flights from major U.S. cities such as Miami, Atlanta, New York, and Charlotte.
St. Thomas is also a popular cruise ship stop. Cruise ships primarily dock at the Havensight or Crown Bay cruise ports, both located on either side of Charlotte Amalie. Passengers can take advantage of their stopover to explore the island or enjoy duty-free shopping at the nearby Havensight Mall.
To reach St. Thomas from another Caribbean island, regional flights are also operated by local airlines, and if you are staying on a nearby U.S. or British Virgin Islands island, you can take a ferry that offers regular service to St. Thomas.
