Measuring about 1,970 feet long and 490 feet wide and covering nearly 22 acres, it is surrounded by a vast lagoon of crystal-clear waters and is known for its long sandbar, white-sand beaches, and lush tropical vegetation. The coral reefs surrounding the island offer exceptional opportunities for scuba diving and snorkeling.
Veligandu appeals to visitors with its peaceful atmosphere and exceptional natural setting. With its overwater and beachfront villas, spectacular sunsets, and wide range of water activities, the island is equally suited to a romantic getaway or a vacation focused on marine life. A small island surrounded by turquoise waters
A tropical setting in the heart of the Indian Ocean
Veligandu is part of the Rasdhoo Atoll, a tiny circular atoll located north of Ari Atoll in the central-western Maldives. Thanks to its intimate size, the island is easy to explore on foot, allowing you to fully enjoy its beaches, coconut palms, and the ever-changing shades of the lagoon.

The island is highly photogenic thanks to its long stretch of white sand extending into the turquoise waters. The contrast between the pristine sand, lush vegetation, and the vivid blue hues of the reef is one of Veligandu's main attractions. The natural environment remains largely preserved, with the resort's facilities blending discreetly into the landscape and leaving plenty of room for beaches and natural areas.
A Lagoon Perfect for Relaxation
The Veligandu Lagoon is an open invitation to swim and unwind. Its calm, crystal-clear waters are ideal for swimming or enjoying water sports just steps from your villa. This constant connection with the ocean gives the island a deeply relaxing atmosphere. Days here revolve around swimming, relaxing on the beach, and taking sunset walks.
The resort offers several types of accommodations overlooking the lagoon, including beachfront villas with direct access to the sand and several categories of overwater villas, some of which feature a private pool or hot tub.
A paradise for snorkeling and scuba diving
A coral reef teeming with marine life
The reef surrounding Veligandu, known as the House Reef, is one of the island's greatest attractions. Easily accessible from the beach, it offers the chance to see tropical fish, rays, and turtles without having to take a boat.
The resort offers guided excursions with a marine biologist, combining biodiversity exploration with education about coral reef conservation. Whether you are an experienced diver or a beginner, the island has a certified dive center providing quick access to nearly 18 dive sites throughout the atoll.
Encounters with large marine animals
Excursions departing from the island allow you to explore the entire Rasdhoo Atoll, renowned for its marine megafauna and exceptional encounters with several species of sharks and rays. Just a three-minute boat ride from Veligandu, the Manta Ray Spa is a prime spot for observing reef manta rays. From December to April, abundant zooplankton in the atoll regularly attracts them to this cleaning station. Farther offshore, about 10 minutes away by boat, the famous Big Blue Point offers experienced divers spectacular dives among scalloped hammerhead sharks.
Every boat trip reveals the richness of the atoll's steep reef walls, although encounters with wildlife are always subject to weather conditions and ocean currents.
A vacation combining relaxation, water activities, and wellness
Activities for enjoying the lagoon
The lagoon is perfect for a wide range of water activities, including kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing, jet skiing, and even parasailing for a bird's-eye view of the atolls. Boat excursions are also regularly organized to explore nearby islands, sail into the sunset, or spot dolphins passing through the atoll.
On land, the resort offers several sports facilities, including tennis courts, beach volleyball, badminton, pickleball, padel, and a fully equipped fitness center.
A destination made for relaxation
For the ultimate relaxing experience, the Himeyn Spa, perched over the lagoon on stilts, offers treatments inspired by Asian traditions in a peaceful setting.
Whether you are walking barefoot along the sandbar or relaxing on your villa's terrace, Veligandu's peaceful atmosphere makes it easy to completely unwind. With its modern facilities and pristine surroundings, the island is particularly well suited to couples, honeymooners, and anyone passionate about the underwater world.
Things not to miss
Veligandu sandbar
This impressive stretch of white sand extending from the tip of the island is Veligandu's signature feature, making it the perfect place for a walk and memorable photos. The contrast between the bright white sand and the lagoon's shades of blue is particularly striking.
The House Reef
Grab your mask and snorkel and explore the island's reef right from the beach. The western section is very easy to access from shore, while the southeastern section is known for regular sightings of turtles and rays. Always check the current conditions with the dive center before heading out for an independent snorkeling session.
Manta Ray Spa
Just a three-minute boat ride from Veligandu, the Manta Ray Spa is a popular cleaning station for reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi). They gather here to have small fish remove parasites from their bodies, creating a fascinating spectacle in their natural environment. Sightings are particularly good from December to April, when abundant zooplankton draws them to the atoll.
A dive at Big Blue Point
A must for scuba diving enthusiasts, this site is about a 10-minute boat ride away and offers excellent opportunities to encounter scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) in open water. The island's dive center takes divers of all experience levels to the best nearby reefs.
Sunset over the lagoon
End the day on the sandbar or aboard a sunset cruise and admire the fiery reflections of the setting sun across the Indian Ocean. The resort also offers private candlelit dinners on the beach after nightfall.
How to get there ?
A seaplane transfer from Malé
After arriving at Velana International Airport (Malé), the transfer to Veligandu is primarily by seaplane, offering an unforgettable panoramic flight over the atolls. The flight takes about 20 minutes and provides a memorable first glimpse of the Maldives, with spectacular aerial views of turquoise lagoons and coral reefs.
Seaplanes operate only during daylight hours, so it is essential to arrange your transfer with the resort in advance and provide your international flight details.
Planning your transfer
To ensure that you are met at the airport, you must provide your flight details and the names of all passengers at least 7 days before arrival. Allow plenty of time at Malé Airport, as seaplane departures depend on flight consolidation and weather conditions.
Alternatively, a speedboat transfer may be available depending on conditions and schedules. The journey then takes about 60 minutes between the airport and Veligandu's jetty.
