Nestled in the heart of the Andaman sea, Koh Lipe island is a true tropical gem located in southern Thailand. This small crescent-shaped island offers paradise beaches with pristine white sand, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and lush vegetation.
Koh Lipe has quickly become a popular tourist destination for travelers seeking tranquility, untouched nature, and unforgettable underwater adventures.
Geographic location
Koh Lipe island is part of the Adang-Rawi archipelago and the Tarutao National Marine Park, located in Satun Province. This small island, with an area of barely 0.8 square miles, is located very close to Koh Adang to the north, about 19 miles from the Koh Tarutao islands and Langkawi, a Malaysian island, to the east.
Paradise beaches
Koh Lipe island is famous for its paradise beaches, including Pattaya Beach, Sunrise Beach, and Sunset Beach. Each beach has its own unique charm and offers an experience that meets everyone's expectations.
Pattaya Beach is the ideal place to relax in the sun and enjoy its many beachfront bars and restaurants, while Sunrise Beach and Sunset Beach are perfect spots due to their orientation for watching breathtaking sunrises — perfect for early risers — and sunsets.
The Thai « Maldives »
Nicknamed the
Thai Maldives by tourists, Koh Lipe island is surrounded by coral reefs whose turquoise waters are full of rich and abundant
marine life, including a wide variety of tropical fish,
sea turtles, manta
rays, and even
whale sharks.
Scuba diving enthusiasts will be delighted by two superb dive sites: Stonehenge, an exceptional garden of colorful soft corals with one of the richest biodiversities in the region, and the legendary 8 Mile Rock, where you can encounter large pelagic species.
And if you've never tried diving before, why not get started and take a scuba diving course on Koh Lipe island, an excellent place for beginners !
Beaches, and more !
Koh Lipe island is not only famous for its natural beauty, it also offers a lively nightlife. In fact, the island’s main pedestrian street, known as Walking Street, is lined with bars, restaurants, and shops, making it the perfect place to enjoy delicious Thai cuisine and local music.
A victim of its own success
Once a peaceful fishing island, Koh Lipe has gradually turned to tourism and is now a victim of its own success, with its main Pattaya Beach increasingly turning into a large parking area for longtail boats and urban development spreading across the island along with its share of waste.
Initiatives have been implemented to protect coral reefs and surrounding
marine life. Thai authorities have therefore decided to close certain areas of the Tarutao National Marine Park to tourists for 5 months each year.
This annual closure is intended to allow nature to regenerate and to limit the impact of tourism on the ecosystem during the monsoon season.
How to get there ?
Located in the Andaman sea in southern Thailand, Koh Lipe island is not the easiest tourist destination to reach, but it is accessible only by boat from the coastal towns of Pak Bara or Trang in Thailand, and from Langkawi, an island in Malaysia. Its strategic location also makes it an ideal destination for those wishing to combine a trip to Thailand with a getaway to Malaysia and vice versa.
Before reaching the ferry or speedboat departure ports, you will first need to take either an international flight to Bangkok, Thailand, or to Langkawi, Malaysia.
Depending on your arrival point, you will then take a domestic flight from Bangkok to one of the two closest airports to Koh Lipe island in Thailand, namely Hat Yai Airport or Trang Airport, followed by a minibus or taxi ride (about 2 hours) to Pak Bara pier.
During high season from November to late April, from Trang you can either go to Pak Bara or take direct shuttle boats connecting the islands, including routes to Koh Lao Liang and then Koh Lipe.
Ferries and speedboats usually drop passengers at a pier offshore from Pattaya Beach, the main beach of Koh Lipe, and you can easily reach your accommodation by taking a water taxi followed by a short walk, given the small size of the island.
Finally, make sure to check flight and ferry schedules when planning your trip, as times may vary depending on the season and seats can sell out quickly during peak season.
