Located in the southern part of Ari Atoll, southwest of Malé, Theluveligaa is a tiny resort island surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Home to the Drift Thelu Veliga Retreat, it offers a particularly intimate experience with just 30 villas, spread between the beach and the lagoon. Accessible by seaplane in about 35 minutes from Velana International Airport in Malé, the island focuses on tranquility, nature, and a laid-back atmosphere, away from the large, lively Maldivian resorts.

With its tropical vegetation, white-sand beaches, and shallow lagoon, Theluveligaa is particularly well suited to travelers looking for a small tropical island where the sea takes center stage. Its main attraction, however, lies beneath the surface: the island has its own coral reef, allowing you to discover a particularly rich variety of marine life directly from the shore.

An intimate atmosphere
Theluveligaa is a very small island, covering about 2.5 acres, entirely occupied by Drift Thelu Veliga Retreat. This setting contributes greatly to its peaceful atmosphere: with just 30 villas, the island retains a human scale and a much more intimate ambiance than the large resort complexes found throughout the Maldives. Ten villas are located directly on the beach, while twenty overwater villas extend above the lagoon.
The architecture and décor favor natural materials and a relatively understated Maldivian aesthetic. The goal is less to create spectacular facilities than to offer the atmosphere of a tropical retreat. Theluveligaa is therefore particularly well suited to couples and travelers looking for peace and quiet, beaches, and water activities rather than a wide variety of restaurants or entertainment.
An island centered around the lagoon
The lagoon naturally lies at the heart of the Theluveligaa experience. The overwater villas offer direct access to the water, while the beach villas provide easy access to the sand and shoreline. The shallow waters in some parts of the lagoon also provide pleasant conditions for swimming and non-motorized water activities.
This setting makes it possible to enjoy the sea at different times of the day, from the beach as well as from the villa jetties. Kayaking, windsurfing, snorkeling, and other water activities can be enjoyed from the resort, while excursions provide opportunities to explore the underwater world and surrounding islands.
A particularly interesting reef for snorkeling
A House Reef accessible from the island
The main attraction of Theluveligaa for marine life enthusiasts is its house reef, the coral reef that directly surrounds the island. It allows you to snorkel without having to take a boat every time you want to reach a more distant site. The reef waters are home to a diversity of corals and tropical fish, making it one of the main highlights of a stay here.

For marine biology enthusiasts, this close proximity to the reef is a significant advantage. You can easily make repeated snorkeling trips throughout your stay, allowing you to observe changes in underwater life depending on the time of day, sea conditions, and areas explored. Scuba diving is also available from the resort, with excursions to different sites in southern Ari Atoll.
A diverse array of marine life
Southern Ari Atoll is renowned for the richness of its marine ecosystems. The region's reefs are home to tropical fish, sea turtles, manta rays, and various species of sharks. This biodiversity largely explains the atoll's appeal for diving and snorkeling.
Theluveligaa therefore provides an interesting base for discovering this marine life. The reef accessible from the island allows for a leisurely exploration of the coastal environment, while boat excursions provide access to more distant habitats and renowned dive sites in southern Ari Atoll.
Southern Ari Atoll, a whale shark haven
Encountering the world's largest fish
Theluveligaa's location in southern Ari Atoll is another major advantage for those fascinated by large marine animals. This region is home to the South Ari Marine Park (SAMPa), a vast protected marine area particularly well known for its year-round whale shark population. The protected area is also home to sea turtles, manta rays, and various species of sharks.
Excursions make it possible to search for whale sharks in the areas frequented by these impressive fish. Sightings naturally depend on sea conditions and animal behavior, and no encounter with wildlife can be guaranteed. The resort nevertheless highlights excursions to Whale Shark Point, one of the iconic sites in this part of the Maldives.
A prime environment for marine life enthusiasts
The presence of whale sharks should not overshadow the diversity of other species that can be observed in southern Ari Atoll. Coral reefs, lagoons, and deeper areas provide complementary habitats for numerous marine species. Diving and snorkeling excursions therefore offer opportunities to explore very different environments during the same stay.
This richness makes Theluveligaa particularly appealing to travelers who want to devote a significant part of their vacation to exploring the underwater world. It offers the dual advantage of a reef accessible directly from the island and access to a region renowned for its large pelagic species.
An island for disconnecting
A peaceful and intimate atmosphere
Theluveligaa focuses more on tranquility than entertainment. With a single island, a limited number of villas, and intentionally modest infrastructure, the experience revolves primarily around the beach, lagoon, nature, and water activities. This atmosphere is particularly well suited to couples and travelers looking for a relaxing stay in a tropical setting.
The resort also features a spa located above the lagoon, a restaurant, and a beachfront bar. Meals, relaxation, and water activities can therefore easily fit into a stay where the pace is intentionally slow.
A small-scale Maldivian experience
Theluveligaa stands out for its small size and intimate atmosphere. With a single island covering just over 2.5 acres and only 30 villas, divided between the beach and lagoon, the resort retains a particularly human scale. The natural surroundings, tropical vegetation, white-sand beaches, and lagoon therefore play a central role in the overall experience.
If you prioritize tranquility, proximity to the sea, and water activities, you will particularly appreciate this setting. You can enjoy snorkeling, kayaking, and paddleboarding close to the island, while the reef is accessible just a short swim from shore. Conversely, if you are looking for a wide range of facilities, restaurants, or entertainment, a larger resort may be a better fit for your expectations.
How to get there ?
A seaplane transfer from Malé
Theluveligaa is located about 56 miles west of Malé, in southern Ari Atoll. The fastest and most spectacular way to reach the island is by seaplane, with a flight of about 35 minutes from Velana International Airport in Malé. The journey offers views over the atolls and their countless islands, reefs, and turquoise lagoons before landing near the resort.
The seaplane transfer is arranged by the resort and must be booked in advance by providing your international flight details. Arriving by air offers a spectacular first glimpse of the Maldives' landscapes and gives you a sense of the vast scale of the archipelago's atolls.
An alternative by speedboat ferry
Another option is to reach Theluveligaa by public speedboat ferry. The service connects Malé Airport with Dhangethi and then Theluveligaa, taking about 1.5 hours when weather conditions are favorable. This option allows you to travel by sea and can be an interesting alternative to the seaplane.
The speedboat ferry is operated by an outside provider and must be booked several days in advance. Schedules and travel times may nevertheless depend on sea conditions. The choice between seaplane and boat will therefore depend in particular on your budget, your arrival time in Malé, and the type of experience you want to prioritize when traveling to this small island in southern Ari Atoll.
